Les Miserables

The 1862 Victor Hugo novel was made into the famous Les Miserables musical in 1980 by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg. The musical was then translated into English in 1985 and subsequently began its reign of the West End stage. Les Miserables is colloquially known as Les Mis. The musical is the longest running musical on the West End where it has enjoyed phenomenal success ever since.

The hit musical has also enjoyed the same success on the stage of New York’s Broadway theatres. Critics have raved about the musical gaining it a collection of Tony Awards including the notably important Best Musical Award. The musical is a compelling story of injustice, crime, true love and loyalty as the characters are seen across France as they flee from their injustices.

Les Miserables includes the well known and successful songs ‘Do You Hear the People Sing?', 'I Dreamed a Dream', and 'Upon These Stones - Building a Barricade'. The story is set within the 19th century in France and the musical sees the characters move across France in their quest for happiness and survival. The musical is once again showing on the West End as The Queen’s Theatre is its home until February 2010.
