Hairspary

Hairspray the musical follows the plot of the 1988 film and 2007 film that followed the success of the musical performances. The story has a family friendly, feel good vibe as it runs a deeper moral undercurrent of a looks obsessed society. The young girl involved, Tracy Turnbald, is rejected from the chance of stardom due to her chubby appearance. The young girl is devastated as her talent is so blatantly obvious but her image appears more important. The strongly willed Tracy does not give in and strives to achieve her dreams and goals in the face of rejection and mockery.

The musical addresses her problems and struggles in the midst of singing and dancing. Songs from the show have proved extremely popular including ‘Good Morning Baltimore’ and ‘Mama, I’m a big girl now’. The musical has been a hit both on Broadway and in London’s West End theatres as the performance at Shaftsbury Theatre considers more dates due to the high demand for Hairspray tickets. The musical has won eight Tony Awards and four Laurence Olivier Awards including the award for Best New Musical, testaments to the quality of performance within the musical.
